SABIC takes appropriate preventative measures for activities that pose a threat to the soil.
We install protective barriers, such as concrete slabs and floors, to prevent contamination of the soil. In addition, we periodically inspect sewers and underground piping for potential leaks as part of our preventive work. A number of underground storage tanks (USTs) have been removed to prevent leakage.
The ALARA (As Low As Reasonably Achievable) principle governs SABIC’s policy towards soil contamination.
In the event that contaminants end up in or on the soil, they are cleaned up in accordance with applicable national laws and regulations. If this proves not to be possible for specific reasons (e.g. plant lay out or reasons related to civil engineering), measures are taken to prevent dispersal.
